Pandit Amarnath

Pandit Amarnath was a respected figure in Indian classical music, recognised both as a refined vocalist and a thoughtful composer. Born in 1924 in Jhang, Punjab (now in Pakistan), his early musical training began under Prof. B. N. Datta in Lahore between 1942 and 1947. Following the Partition of India, he moved to Delhi, where his musical journey took a defining turn. It was Prof. Datta who guided him towards Ustad Amir Khan, recognising Amarnath’s natural alignment with the maestro’s style.

Accepted as the first and closest disciple of Ustad Amir Khan, Pandit Amarnath became an important torchbearer of the Indore Gharana. While his guru was known for establishing the vilambit, or slow and meditative style of khayal singing, Amarnath further expanded the gharana’s repertoire by composing bandishes infused with mystic poetry. These compositions, created under his pen name Miturang, remain a significant contribution to khayal literature and pedagogy.

Beyond performance and composition, Pandit Amarnath played a vital institutional role in Indian music. He served All India Radio for eight years as a composer, a position he held during the tenure of Pandit Ravi Shankar. He later worked as Director of Triveni Kala Sangam and as a Guru at Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra in Delhi, where he trained and influenced generations of students in classical vocal music.

His creative work extended to film and documentary music as well. He composed the music for the Hindi film Garam Coat (1955), featuring songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar, and also directed music for a documentary on Mirza Ghalib. This documentary is notable for containing the only recorded ghazal sung by Ustad Amir Khan.

Pandit Amarnath passed away on 9 March 1996, leaving behind a rich artistic and intellectual legacy. His life and thought have been documented in published works, and his contribution continues to be honoured through the annual Pandit Amarnath Vaggeyakar Samman, instituted in his memory by the Pandit Amarnath Memorial Foundation.
