Alam Lohar

Alam Lohar, born Muhammad Alam Lohar in 1928 in the village of Achh near Kotla Arab Ali Khan in Punjab, British India (now Pakistan), was a pioneering figure in Punjabi folk music. Coming from a family of Lohars (blacksmiths), his early life was deeply connected to rural culture, oral storytelling, and Sufi traditions. From a young age, he was drawn to Sufiana Kalaam and Punjabi folk poetry, which shaped his expressive singing style and narrative depth.

He developed a unique musical identity by transforming the traditional Punjabi vaar—a form of epic folk narration—into a powerful performance style that combined storytelling, melody, and rhythm. Alam Lohar became especially renowned for his mastery of Jugni, a folk narrative form through which he commented on social, spiritual, and cultural themes. His energetic chimta playing, paired with a resonant and emotive vocal delivery, became his signature and influenced generations of folk performers.

Alam Lohar recorded his first album at a young age and went on to achieve remarkable success, earning multiple gold records through recordings released by EMI/His Master’s Voice and other labels. His celebrated works include Jugni, Heer, Saif-ul-Mulook, Mirza Sahiban, Sassi Punnu, Dhulla Bhatti, Bol Mitti De Baweya, and Wajan Mariyan Bulaya, many of which are considered foundational texts of Punjabi folk music.

During the 1970s, he toured internationally, performing in countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Germany, and Norway, where he became a cultural bridge for South Asian diaspora communities. His sudden death in a road accident in 1979 marked the end of an era, but his legacy continues strongly through his recordings and through his son, Arif Lohar, who carries forward the family’s folk tradition.

Honored with the Pride of Performance Award by the Government of Pakistan, Alam Lohar remains an enduring symbol of Punjabi cultural identity, folk storytelling, and musical heritage.
