Abhimanyu Lal

Abhimanyu Lal is a Kathak dancer and choreographer rooted in a prominent Delhi-based Kathak lineage. He is the son and disciple of Guru Geetanjali Lal and is connected to the tradition shaped by his grandfather, Pandit Devi Lal, and his grand-uncle, Pandit Durga Lal. Although initially inclined toward singing, his formal engagement with Kathak began in his teenage years under the guidance of his mother, after which dance became his principal discipline.

Alongside Kathak, he pursued formal training in western drumming at the YMCA, New Delhi. This dual grounding in movement and rhythm informs his performance practice, allowing him to engage with Kathak both as a dancer and as a percussionist. His work often explores the relationship between footwork, rhythmic composition, and live musical interaction.

Abhimanyu is an ‘A’ grade artist of Doordarshan and an empaneled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). His performance career spans major dance festivals and cultural platforms in India and abroad, with appearances in countries including Austria, Norway, the Netherlands, Canada, Egypt, Switzerland, Fiji, Mauritius, Réunion Island, Seychelles, South Africa, Bulgaria, and Singapore. He has represented Indian dance at large international events such as the London Olympics, Indian Republic Day celebrations abroad, and government-supported cultural showcases in New York, Russia, and the Middle East.

His performance style emphasizes all three components of Kathak—nritta (pure dance), nritya (expressive and rhythmic movement), and natya (abhinaya and dramatic communication). He is particularly noted for his command over footwork and rhythmic articulation. Improvisation forms an integral part of his concerts, and he frequently involves audiences through clapping patterns and interactive rhythmic exchanges.

Abhimanyu also integrates percussion into his stage work, at times reproducing Kathak rhythmic structures on drums. While he performs traditional compositions and choreographies created by Guru Geetanjali Lal, he has also engaged in contemporary formats, including collaborative jugalbandi with African drummers and cross-genre projects.

In addition to performance, he is actively engaged in pedagogy. He serves as Varishtha Kathak Prashikshak (Senior Instructor) at Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, where he trains students in technique, repertoire, and performance practice. His work connects lineage-based training with contemporary presentation, contributing to the continuity and evolution of Kathak in institutional and global contexts.
