Biography
Abdul Latif Khan (1927–2003) was a renowned Indian classical musician, best known for his mastery of the sarangi, one of the most expressive instruments in Hindustani classical music. He was born on 27 March 1927 in Gohad, Bhind district, Madhya Pradesh, India, into a family deeply connected with music. From an early age, he was exposed to classical traditions and received training within his own family.
He learned music under the guidance of his father Ustad Chhote Khan and other family members, following the traditional guru-shishya parampara. Initially, he gained knowledge of instruments like sitar, tabla, and santoor, but later specialized in the sarangi under Bade Ghulam Sabir Khan. His style reflected deep understanding of ragas and strong command over accompaniment as well as solo performance.
Abdul Latif Khan performed at many prestigious music festivals and was also associated with All India Radio, Bhopal as a staff artist. He accompanied several legendary vocalists such as Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Amir Khan, Kishori Amonkar, and Kumar Gandharva, which shows his high level of respect in the classical music world. His sarangi playing was admired for its emotional depth and technical excellence.
Throughout his career, he received major recognitions for his contribution to Indian classical music. He was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1990 and later honored with the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2002. These awards highlight his important role in preserving and promoting the sarangi tradition in India.
He passed away on 23 April 2003 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India, at the age of 74. Even after his death, his legacy continues through his students and family members, many of whom are also accomplished sarangi players.
